Why People Become Caregivers
And what does it mean to be one
What does it mean to be a caregiver? Dictionaries define it as: “a family member or paid helper who regularly looks after a child or a sick, elderly, or disabled person”. However, anyone who has ever taken care of a family member knows that being a caregiver is much more than that.
It means devoting yourself to the wellbeing of others. It means becoming a full-time chef, driver, medical advisor, and most importantly, best friend. Being a caregiver is extremely rewarding for the right type of person, so what does it mean to be a caregiver and why do people choose to become one?
Our Memoryz team went out and asked multiple caregivers about what motivated them to devote themselves to the caregiving lifestyle.
Here are the top 5 reasons:
- Making an Impact
Being a caregiver means doing work that has the potential to have an impactful difference in someone’s life. It gives a sense of fulfillment most jobs rarely provide. Caregiving allows you to give back to members of your family or community while also knowing that you are putting a smile on people’s faces and making their day better.
- Everyday is Different
If a 9–5 desk job surrounded by excel sheets sounds appealing to you, caregiving might be for you. Caregiving means doing a vast variety of tasks every day. Instead of saying “That’s not my job”, you like pitching into whatever is needed. You enjoy being physical and stimulating both your body and mind.
- To Put it Simply: You Love People
You enjoy working with people, especially when you get to have meaningful one-on-one interaction with others. You rather devote your time and efforts to making a difference in someone else’s life rather than normal corporations and hope someone will do the same for you when you are older
- You Value Your Independence
Caregiving allows a lot of flexibility and independence in your work. It lets you be creative and think on your feet. While Home Care and Caregiving facilities involve different levels of responsibility, overall caregiving gives you a lot of power and independence over your work and time.
- It’s The Most Convenient Investment of Your Time
You don’t want to invest in many years of formal education but you are willing to learn new skills and take continuing education to do your job well.
Being a caregiver is more than just looking out for someone. It is a selfless lifestyle made for those who are passionate about having an impact on other people’s life and thrive in environments where they get to use their mind and body to help people.
